Citation accompanying the award of the honorary degree:

Discoverer of the vaccine for the prevention of poliomyelitis, that scourge which has caused dread in the hearts of every family, not only in American, but throughout the world; his is a name that will go down in history and will be spoken amongst men in words of wonder and gratitude.
